Disfigurement

*Published in YouthInk, January 2007

array of kohl liner pencils
blackened, sharpened, tracing
slits of black along
glazed-over mistily-fogged
cocaine-dimmed eyes
coloured eyeshadows in unnatural
blues purples yellows and greens
painting plastic Popsicle-shades
in garish disfigurement
of bare, pale, sun-shunned skin
upon lips that pout prettily
and whisper in the darkness
upon lips that taste every drop of acid
bright red lipstick is slashed on
blood on tissues blotted with sweat
and messily caked-on foundation
beneath this elaborate masquerade
this painted-on charade
of war-paint to face the world
what creature lies beneath?
